My last blog garnered not one, but two, comments from John Stamos. He’s started commenting regularly on “Stuff and Things” since I mentioned my desire to meet him in a previous
post. The weird thing is that sometimes his comments seem disjointed, like perhaps the comments are coming from not one, but two different John Stamos’s
(oh that the world could be so lucky!) But never mind. I figure this comment oddity gives me opportunity to talk about John Stamos and why I love him so much.
I grew up watching
Full House on TGIF. Kids these days don’t know what they’re missing! TGIF rocked.
Perfect Strangers, Step by Step, Family Matters, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and even
Teen Angel for a brief half-season. What a great way to spend Friday nights! But I digress…
Full House was always a favorite. Looking back now, watching the episodes again on DVD (my younger sister has at least 5 seasons on DVD—maybe more) I realize its not a great show from an acting standpoint. The formula is the same in every episode: Two stories, one just for laughs, the other ending with the “Emotion Music” as one of the adults explains the situation and expresses their love to whomever is in trouble this time. And it always ends with everyone happily sitting down to dinner or walking out the door. And really, John Stamos had some truly awful hair in the first couple seasons. Can we say MULLET?! It cleaned up nicely by season 3 or 4, but to be quite honest,
Full House isn’t the reason I love John Stamos.
My reasons for adoring John Stamos are really three-fold.
1) John Stamos loves Disney. When I worked at Disney World I really wanted to meet him, but I never showed up at the park the same day he did. My roommate saw him at Epcot and I rue the moment I decided to go to the Magic Kingdom instead. What was I thinking?!
2) John Stamos was the subject of one of the funniest standup routines I’ve heard on Comedy Central. The comic said when he died he was going to have his lawyer send a request to a B-list star, like John Stamos, to come to the funeral and cry. If he did this, he’d get like $5,000. That way when people came to the funeral they’d be crying and look over and see John Stamos and be all, “Is that John Stamos? Is he crying? Is Kevin’s last name Stamos!?” This idea sent me into a fit of giggles, and it’s also proved to be a great way to pass a Road Trip—listing B-list stars and saying, “Is Tara’s last name Lopez? Is Tara’s last name Danza?” Awesome.
3) John Stamos is the kind of celebrity I’d want to be. He’s pretty to look at, and he’s well-known, but not too many people would actually mob him on the street. I’d want to be the celebrity people see and go, “Hey look—there’s so-and-so” but don’t feel a need to go meet.
So if John Stamos is out there reading this, or if anyone who wants to claim to be John Stamos is out there reading this, let me reiterate that
I love John Stamos! And if I see him/you on the street I’ll probably go, “Oh my gosh! Look! There’s John Stamos!” and then go find a hot dog.
